Cosmetic / therapeutic regulation

Products used on the skin can be regulated as medicines or as cosmetics depending on their ingredients and the claims that are made either on labels or in advertisements. Sometimes the distinction between a cosmetic and a medicine may come down to a single word or illustration on a label and this can have major cost implications for the product.

The cosmetic regulator, NICNAS, has recently introduced interim arrangements for the regulation of cosmetic chemicals whereby some products that were regulated as medicines are now treated as cosmetics.

Members of our team have been closely involved in the development of these new arrangements through NICNAS. We can help ensure that your products are appropriately formulated and labelled to meet the new cosmetic requirements.
